Organic chemistry

Cards (4)

  • Combustion
Alcohol + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + water.
Ethanol + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + Water
  • Reaction with group 1 (alcohols).
    1. What 3 acids react with the group 1 metal?
    2. What is the gas produced by them?
    3. How does the length of carbon chain affect the reaction?
    . Methanol, ethanol, propanol.
    . Hydrogen gas.
. The shorter the carbon chain the more reactive the alcohol.
  • Carboxylic acids.
    1. Alcohols are oxidised they form carboxylic acids.
    2. Each alcohol oxidises.
    3. They turn into: Methanoic, ethanoic, propanoic and butanoic acid.
    4. Their functional group is COOH.
    5. The general formula is: C2H2n+1COOH.
    6. Draw out diagrams and their formula.
  • Chemical properties.
-They all have similar properties as they are all part of the same homologous series.
-These properties include: flammable, water soluble and being oxidised.
-They undergo various reactions. You need to know the ones with sodium, air, water and oxygen.
