  • Art can sometimes reveal more about the artist than the society and culture in which they live. At times, art appears to mirror the very essence of humanity. Other times, it's purely visual, a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Art can reflect the natural world's rich, multifaceted beauty, yet it can also make uncomfortable, hard, and far from beautiful messages.

  • The emergence of artist and artisans artist throughout history
    1. In the Ancient World, artists were essentially labourers who inherited the trade from their fathers, with little creative expression allowed
    2. In the Middle Ages, artists learned through apprenticeships and were seen as craftsmen rather than artists
    3. The Renaissance marked the end of anonymous work, allowing artists to be recognised for their work and incorporating more complex themes

  • When art was created by artisans, it was viewed as a job with little room for expression or originality. Artisans had limited autonomy, and their work was dictated by those in power.

    Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan or the National Living Treasures Award, institutionalised in 1992 to recognise and promote traditional artists in the Philippines
  • The NCCA, through the Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan Executive Council, conducts the search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others, and undertakes measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among our people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan.
