Types of network protocols

Cards (12)

  • How is Ethernet a protocol
    • Ethernet is a protocol that defines how data should be physically transmitted between network hardware.
    • Ethernet is used in wired networks.
  • How is Wi-fi a protocol
    • Wi-Fi (802.11x) is a set of protocols defining how data should be transmitted using radio waves.
    • Wi-Fi is used in wireless networks
  • TCP/IP is the most important protocol
    • TCP/IP is the protocol which dictates how data is sent between networks (e.g. over the Internet)
    • It is made up of 2 protocols : TCP and IP
  • What is TCP
    • TCP stands for Transmission Control Protocol
    • It sets the rules for how devices connect on the network
    • It’s in charge of splitting data into packets and reassembling the packets back into the original data once they reach the receiving device
  • What is IP
    • IP stands for Internet Protocol
    • It is responsible for directing packets to their destination across the network
  • There are several other protocols that build upon TCP/IP to do specific Internet-based tasks
  • What is HTTP
    • HTTP stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
    • It is used by web browsers to access websites and communicate with web servers
  • What is HTTPS
    • HTTPS stands for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure
    • It is a more secure version of HTTP
    • It encrypts all information sent and received
  • What is FTP
    • FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol
    • It is used to access, edit and move files between devices on a network (e.g.access files on a server from a client computer)
  • What is POP3
    • POP3 stands for File Post Office Protocol version 3
    • It is used to retrieve emails from servers
    • The server holds the email until you download it , at which point it is deleted from the server
  • What is IMAP
    • IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol
    • It is used to retrieve emails from servers
    • The server holds the email until you delete it yourself , as when you download the email , you only download a copy of it
    • It is used by most web-based email clients
  • What is SMTP
    • SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
    • It is used to send emails
    • It also transfers emails between servers
