Ribbon Lake

• snow accumulates on north facing hollows as these areas are colder
• accumulated snow compresses into firn, then ice
• plucking happens when ice freezes onto bedrock pulling loose rock away from the valley sides
• abrasion when rocks embedded in the ice grind the valley floor as the glacier moves downhill due to gravity, and deepens it
• freeze thaw weathering happens when melted ice gets into the cracks of the rocks, freezes, then expands, causing rock to break off
• ribbon lakes can form when softer bedrock is more deeply eroded than the surrounding area
• they can also form when terminal moraine creates a dam
