CG-I Interaction

Cards (13)

  • Define Attachment.
A close two way emotional bond between 2 individuals - both seen as essential for their emotional security
  • Define Reciprocity.
The way how 2 people interact
    • seen as 'turn talking' - similar to a conversation, responding back and forth
  • Define Interactional Synchrony.
When the caregiver and infant actions and emotions mirror each other simultaneously
  • What behaviours show an attachment?
-> Proximity - distance between infant and CG
-> Separation Distress - distress when CG is not in presence
-> Secure Base Behaviour - when independent from CG will always return regularly
  • What is the Alert Phase?
When infants show signals that they are ready for interactions
    -> eye contact
  • How many times do the mothers normally respond to alert phases?
-> 2/3 - depends on the mothers skills or external factors (stress)
  • What is Active Involvement?
Infants being involved in initiating interactions and not as a passive role
-> Infant and CG take turns - Brazelton - described it as a 'dance'
  • Who did a study on Interactional Synchrony?
    Meltzoff and Moore
  • What did Meltzoff and Moore do?
-> Studies 2 weeks old infants and had adults display 1/3 facial expressions/ gestures
-> Infant responses were filmed and identified by independent observers
    >> there was an association with the facial expression / gesture to the infants action
  • Who did a study on attachment with Interactional Synchrony?
    Isabella et al
  • Explain Isabella study.
-> observed 30 mothers and infants - assessing the degree of synchrony
-> also assessed the quality of CG-I attachment
    >> figured that high levels of synchrony associate with better CG-I attachment quality
  • STRENGTH - controlled experiment
-> Meltzoff & Moore - filmed in laboratory
-> Recorded interactions can be later analysed - look for finer details / inter-rater reliability
-> Babies unaware of filming - natural behaviour
    >> data is reliable and has validity
  • LIMITATION - interpretive bias
-> Infant behaviour is hard to interpret - lack co ordination & almost immobile
-> movements/expressions were small - difficult to understand from infants POV -> if its a twitch or trigger from CG
    >> interpreting results in their favour
