  • deviance = behaviour that is considered to be against the norms and values of society
  • unusual and good deviance = eg heroically risking your life to save someone else
  • unusual and eccentric deviance = such as talking to trees or hoarding huge quantities of newspaper.
  • unusual and bad behaviour = deviance in the form of criminal behaviour that society would frown upon.
  • legal definition of criminal behaviour - any action forbidden by criminal law which needs an actus reus and a mens rea
  • social definiton of criminal behaviour - consideration of different views on what makes certain behaviours criminal, whether a law is actually enforced, and whether poeple think that certain acts should have laws against them or not
  • custodial sentences - court imposed imprisonment or a detention in a young offenders institute
  • community sentences - court imposed work, fines, courses, probation orders, restrictions, drug treatments, that are served outside of prison
  • police sanctions - cautions and warnings that are issued for minor offences and dont require a court appearance
