  Cells that only contain half the genetic material of a normal cell (haploid)
• Consists of two rounds of cell division.

  1. Replicate DNA

  2. Chromosomes line up in pairs

  3. Chromosome pairs pulled apart

  4. Cell splits in two

  5. Cell splits in two again
• Chromosome number is halved= 46 -->23
• Male gametes develop into sperm cells, female gametes develop into egg cells
• Meiosis produces four daughter cells - each having half the number of chromosomes from each parent.
• Where does meiosis occur?

  In reproductive cells (ovaries + testies)
• Produces haploid cells (haploid- 1 set of chromosomes)
• Stages of meiosis:

  Prophase

  Metaphase

  Anaphase

  Telophase
• Involved in sexual reproduction
