Despite his bite he expresses the classical stiff upper lip attitude of British male one must carry on and not let his pain effect him 'I'm quite alright Barbara I'll run it under a cold tap' Ed and Shaun are direct foils to Philip. Shaun freely admits his love for Liz much to the embarrassment of Ed who responds immaturely.
