SCI7 LESSON#3 4TH-Q

Cards (8)

  • Layers of the Atmosphere
    Troposphere
    Stratosphere
    Mesosphere
    Thermosphere
    Exosphere
  • Troposphere is the layer closest to Earth’s surface (0-12 kms)
    - HOT – because of reflections of the ground (Mainit pa lamig kasi altitude)
    - where weather occurs
    - airplanes do not want to travel here because of turbulence
-where weather balloons rise and pop
  • Stratosphere is the layer of air that extends to about 50 km from Earth’s surface
    • where aircraft fly (or at least can fly with relative ease to the pilot) - (malamig painit) reason is that the direct heat source for the stratosphere is the Sun - where the ozone layer is
  • Ozone layer - part of the Stratosphere
    - about 20-30 kms away from the sea level
    • contains ozone (also known as trioxygen with symbol: O3), a pale blue gas that which filters out wavelengths of UV light which can be dangerous to various organisms on the Earth’s surface
  • Mesosphere - air is thin and cold (50- 80 km)
    • mainit palamig – kasi wala ng gas particles na mag aabsorb ng heat
    • where meteors burn
  • Karman line - 100 km away from the crust - the official start of Outer space
  • Thermosphere - air is thin (80-700 km)
    • temp changes is small but increasing, due to closeness to the sun - Aurora borealis and Aurora Australis (southern and Northern lights) occurs here
    • space shuttle and international space station
  • Exosphere - last layer of the Earth’s atmosphere (700 km to 10000 km)
    • air is thin, gradual increase in temp
    • - where are found satellites
