  • Poetry- is an intricate literary form that evokes imaginative awareness and emotional response through chosen language and arranged form of its meaning, sound and rhythm.
  • Speaker- the narrative voice of the poem. The poem could also be in first person.
  • Tone- refers to the persona's voice/tone in the poem. The authors feelings, thoughts and emotions are associated with the person or thing
  • Mood- this is the feeling or vibes that the readers get from the poem. It creates an emotional setting for the reader.
  • Theme- is the universal idea that threads through the entire story.
  • Structure of poetry- the way it is presented to the reader
  • couplet- 2 line stanzas
  • 3 line stanzas- tercet
  • 4 line stanzas - Quatrain
  • 5 line stanzas- Quintet
  • 6 line stanzas - Setset
  • 7 line stanzas - Septet
  • 8 line stanzas - Octave
  • 9 line stanzas- Spenserian
  • 14 line stanzas - Sonet
  • Diction- style of writing and speaking determined by the choice of words of a speaker or writer.
  • Symbolism- Feeling or emotions associated with an object that uses symbols and are closely-related.
  • Lyrical Poetry- expresses personal thoughts and emotions. A short poem that has a characteristic of a song.
  • Epic- a long narrative poem that normally talks about adventure or heroic events.
  • Elegy- a type of poem that expresses lament or mourning of the dead. Feeling of grief or melancholy. Them-death.
  • ODE- a type of poetry that expresses dignity and praise for some persons, object, idea or event. Exalted in tone and formal in structure and content.
  • Dramatic poetry- this is closely related to a drama. It uses dramatic technique and may unfold the story.
  • Sonet- consisting of 14 lines and known to follow a strict pattern of rhyme. Classified into Petrarchan, Shakesperean, Spenserian and Miltonic Sonets.
  • Ballad- normally talks about legends or folk tales.
  • Narrative poetry- narrates a story that uses poetic diction, either real or imaginary.
  • Soliloquy- addressed to oneself. Thoughts spoken out loud without addressed to another.
  • Dramatic Monologue- combination of drama and poetry. Presents some line or word to a single character in a particular situation.
  • Cinquain-a poem consisting of five line stanza.
  • Free verse- a poem that doesn't rely on any particular form, meter, or rhyme scheme, yet still conveys powerful feelings and ideas.
  • Name poem- a poem that has acronyms of a person or thing.
