Cards (12)

  • Brain
Responsible for controlling thoughts, movement sensations and emotions. It also regulates breathing and heartbeat.
  • Stomach
Temporary food storage area. Muscle movements and stomach acid breaks our food down.
  • Lungs
Responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the air.
  • Heart
Pumps blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to cells.
  • Skin
A protective barrier. Regulates body temperature. Contains sensory receptors for touch, temperature and pain.
  • Kidneys
Vital organs of the urinary system, that filters waste products and excess substances from the blood to produce urine.
  • Liver
Produces bile which helps digest and break down fats and oils. Controls blood sugar, destroys poisons and stores vitamins and iron.
  • Small intestine
Makes enzymes that complete the digestive process. Digested food is absorbed into your bloodstream and carried to all the cells in your body.
  • Large intestine
Undigested material is passed into the large intestine. As material passes, water, salt and vitamins are absorbed so that they can be reused by the body.
  • Rectum
The final part of the large intestine. This is where the faeces are stored.
  • Gallbladder
Bile made in the liver is stored here. Bile breaks up fats into droplets small enough to be transported to the rest of the body.
  • Oesophagus
Also known as the food pipe or gullet. It carries the food to the stomach, using involuntary muscular contractions.
