  Engaging in behaviors which are maladaptive and therefore not good for you
• Abnormal behaviors


  • Anorexic people going to hurt themselves when they do resist the urge to eat because of their disease
• Gaff scale


  Global assessment functioning scale, measures the changes in one's adequate functioning levels
• Completing the Gaff scale


  1. Individual has to do a questionnaire

  2. Their level of functioning assessed in terms of family, friends, work, etc.

  3. Scored out of 100 on how maladaptive their behaviors are

  4. 100 being not maladaptive at all, 0 being absolutely maladaptive

  5. Previous scores compared to current scores

  6. If current score is lower, it means failing to function adequately
• Adequacy depends on the culture
• Abnormal behaviors are not always maladaptive
• Failure to function adequately depends on value judgments
• Someone who's abnormal may consider themselves as normal and vice versa
