President Truman ordered Japan to surrender or be destroyed. When they refused, he dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and another on Nagasaki on August 9th. Japan surrendered on April 14. They officially signed a letter of surrender on the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay on 9/2/1945. The war was over.
