Acute Oxygen Therapy

Cards (3)

  • Acute Oxygen Therapy:
    • For acutely ill patients NOT at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure – target saturation range is 94 - 98%
    • For acutely ill patients at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure – target saturation range is 88 - 92%
  • Acute Oxygen Therapy:
    • For acutely ill patients at risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure
    • e.g. COPD
    • target saturation range is 88 - 92%
    • 24% Venturi mask → ABG after 30 - 60 mins
    • why do they need an ABG? - to see if we have caused a change in co2 and o2 levels (dont want to cause increase in co2)
    • Repeat ABG after each rise in FiO2
  • Acute Oxygen Therapy:
    • Acute hypoxaemia with no risk of hypercapnic respiratory failure
    • e.g. pneumonia or asthma
    • give high FiO2 if required (40 - 60% O2)
    • Use Venturi masks if breathless
