  • theistic creationism

Many religious thinkers argue that we know about the origins of the universe and life through Divine Revelation. This is that an outside power such as God gave us knowledge e.g. holy books, prophets, holy leaders
  • Christian creationism
creationists believe the Bible literally, it's the word of God.
  • Christian creationism
believe the Bible is infallible. Therefore reasonable to believe God created the world
  • christian creationism
Genesis 1 states that God created the world and life in 6 days and rested on the 7th, 'God said let there be light'
  • Christian creationism
Young earth creationists believe the earth was created 6,000 years ago, it can be calculated through genealogy within the bible that the world was created in 4004BC
  • Christian creationism- life
Bible says that plants and animals were created in final form by God, known as fixity of species . Humans were made on day 6, in the 'image of God', they were special
  • Christian creationism
The Genesis flood made the world appear older than it is. We need a 'careful study of Biblical data.' Science misinterprets and skews knowledge.
  • Christian creationism
Gallup poll 2019- 40% of Americans believe in Young Earth Creationism
  • Christian creationism
A strength of the creationist view is that it is based on Genesis the literal word of God which does not alter over time.
  • Christian creationism
biblical evidence does not rely solely on observation. Science is based on experiments and the conclusion changes over time and has been wrong before e.g. flat earth
  • christian creationism

weakness- radiocarbon dating of fossils dates them as millions of years old.
  • christian creationism

weakness- evidence points to Big Bang theory- 13.7 billion years old
  • Scientific materialism
Big Bang theory- the universe started with a singularity, and infinitely dense particle where all matter was condensed into this single point. Then after a chance explosion it expanded over the next 13.7 billion years.
  • Scientific materialism
Evidence for the Big Bang includes The Red Shift of distant galaxies. This demonstrates the universe is still expanding today as galaxies are moving away from each other, causing a change in the light spectrum. This reveals that one time they were contracted together.
  • Scientific materialism
Other evidence is Cosmic- microwave background radiation radiation that can be detected, this is energy left over from the Big Bang.
  • Scientific materialism- life
believe in evolution- living things had adapted to suit their environment e.g. peppered moth
  • Scientific materialism- life

evolution- Humans share 98% of DNA with Chimpanzees
  • Scientific materialism
strength- constantly verifying findings. God just fills gaps in knowledge e.g. God of the gaps.
  • Scientific materialism-
Weakness- its a theory, not all proven yet
  • Compatibilism
science and religion aren't at war.
  • Compatibilism
May read Bible metaphorically rather than as historical account of creation. Genesis 1 contains truths about God and creation, and they believe it reveals God's nature and human purpose.
  • Compatibilism
Its compatible with scientific explanations as in Genesis 1 'let there be light', could be a metaphor for the Big Bang.
  • Compatibilism
Teleological argument supports the compatibility idea, showing that the very success of science points to there being a creator. Science demonstrates the universe is orderly, with laws so in conclusion there must be a lawgiver.
  • Compatibilism
Fibonacci sequence- God's fingerprint is throughout creation
  • Compatibilism
Anthropic principle- everything in the universe is just right for human survival so some divine being must have done this
  • Compatibilism
    weakness- God of the gaps
  • Compatibilism
weakness- why would the all loving God create 'survival of the fittest' to create life.
  • Compatibilism
strength- ignorant not to take in both points of views
