LAW ENFORCEMENT

• Official forms of policing were developed as a result of the population boom, urbanisation and industrialisation.
• Watchmen continued to patrol on foot at night.
• Parish Constables dealt with petty crime.
• Soldiers were used to put down riots and large protests across the country.
• In 1749 in London, the Bow Street Runners were established by the Fielding brothers.
• The Bow Street Runners tracked down criminals/stolen property (previously thief takers), charging fees and collecting rewards.
• By 1785 the Bow Street Runners were paid by the government and were the first modern detective force.
