    • The Metropolitan Police Act (1829) gave London a uniformed police force.
    • The emphasis was on deterring criminals by having a public presence on the street, with constables patrolling beats to catch criminals.
    • This new police force had far greater numbers than the Bow Street Runners and was far better organised.
