Properties of Equality and Congruence

• Reflexive property of equality - any real number is equal to itself. a=a
• Symmetric property of equality - if a real number is equal to another real number, then the number is equal to the original number. If a=b, then b=a.
• Transitive property of equality - If a=b and b=c, then a=c.
• Substitution property of equality - If x=3, then 2x+4= 2(3) + 4.
• Addition property and subtraction property of equality - adding a real number to both sides of the true equation produces another true equation.
• Multiplication property and division property of equality - multiplying both sides of a true equation by a non-zero real number produces another true equation.
