  • Why did Britain fail at Gallipoli?
    German and Turkish soldiers built good trenches on hills above the arriving British, Turkish soldiers were skilled (Especially after the Balkan wars)
  • Verdun?
    700,000 soldiers died, France were somewhat victorious, the Battle of the Somme moved German troops away from Verdun, relieving pressure off the French soldiers
  • Somme?
    Started July 1916, ended in November. Britain lost over 400,000, France over 200,000, Germany over 500,000. The German trenches were far superior to the British trenches. 57,000 British soldiers died on the first day. The somme ended the Germans pursuit of Verdun.
  • Passchendale?
    July 1917, weather conditions made technology ineffective, the German counter attacks were very successful, but churned up the ground making it difficult to transport resources.
  • Life in Trenches?
    Smelt awful (especially in summer) due to rotting flesh, the trenches were often water logged. British were best fed, average soldier gained 10lbs after joining.
  • Schlieffen plan?
    Germany aimed to attack France and defeat them in 6 weeks before Russia could mobilise. 4th August 1914 Germany invaded Belgium.
  • Why the Schlieffen plan failed?
    Resistance from the Belgian army and the support from the BEF. Russia also mobilised a lot faster than Germany expected.
  • Battle of Marne?
    French soldiers were defending against the Germans. British and French troops retreated south of the Seine and Marne rivers. Soldiers started digging marked the start of trench warfare.

  • Franz Ferdinand assasination?
    28th June. Black Hand gang rebelling against Austrian rule. Ferdinand and wife were shot. Austria sent 10 point ultimatum, Serbia rejected one point, Austria declare war, with support from Germany (Blank cheque)
  • 2nd Moroccan crisis (Agadir crisis)?
    1911, a rebellion broke out against the Sultan. Germany sent a gun boat (A bit of an over-reaction). German people were enraged by the British and French.
  • Bosinan crisis?
    1908, Austria took control of Bosnia. Serbia got support from Russia, however they backed down once Germany entered, as Russia didn't want war.
  • Moroccon Crisis?
    1905, The Kaiser visited in order to increase Germany's empire, France and Germany threatened war. The Algeciras conference Germany were only supported by Austria. Increased tension between Britain and France towards Germany.
