  • Act
    The external division of the play into more or less equal parts on the basis of time and development of the action
  • Scene
    A smaller division showing a single setting and a time frame, sometimes marked by the entrance and exit of a character
  • Full-length play
    Has several acts that constitute the whole story
  • Stage direction
    • Gives vital information for the action and relationships between people, things, and places inside the play script
  • Cues
    A signal prompting on an event in performance, e.g. an actor's speech or entrance lightning or sound effect

    A person (offstage) who prompts an actor if they forget their lines

    • It is highlighting and can be used to separate a character from the back drop and characters around them

    The time and place in which the story takes place. The period of a story can impact characters, plot, and theme

    • Flat pieces of scenery which can be printed to give the appearance of a building or setting

    Items carried on stage by an actor, small items on the set used by the actors
  • Dialogue
    A conversation between two or more people, or speech that is written down as part of a piece of narrative text
  • Aside
    Speech delivered to the audience supposedly not heard by the characters on stage
  • Monologue
    A long speech to the audience or another character on stage
  • Duologue
    A scene between two characters
  • Soliloquy
    Characters share their thoughts with the audience
  • Stage left
    The left side of the stage as seen by the actors looking out at the audience
  • Callback
    The second round of auditions
  • Blocking
    Direction given to actors as to where they should stand or move during the course of the play
  • Dry tech

    The first technical rehearsal, without actors (therefore, without costumes and props) so that lights, sound, and running crew can rehearse their parts
  • Places
    When actors and technical crews have been told that the production will start within five minutes and they are to be in place and ready
  • Upstage
    The part of the stage that is farthest from the audience
  • Stage right
    The right side of the stage as seen by the actors looking out at the audience
  • Downstage
    The part of the stage that is closest to the audience
  • Curtain call
    When the actors come out at the end of the show to take their bows
  • Call time
    The time that all actors and crew are expected to be at the theater
