  • normally, the trade winds of the Pacific ocean blow from east to west. this pushes warm water towards Asia and Australasia. at the same time the temperature of the Pacific off the coast of south america is cooler. normally the weather off the coast of Asia and Australasia is warm and a wet climate.
  • in an el nino year, for some reason the trade winds weaken in strength, this causes the waters off the coast of south america to increase in temperature. This causes countries in south america such as Peru to have an increase of rainfall which causes more flooding. it also causes other countries such as India to have an increase in droughts.
  • an el nino year causes global temperatures to increase altogether.
