• The bacteria that causes salmonella food poisoning are spread by ingesting infected food
• This is the kind of food that is prepared in unhygienic conditions.
• The salmonella bacteria secretes harmful chemicals called toxins. These cause the symptoms of salmonella.
• Symptoms include a fever, abdominal cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
• Salmonella bacteria are sometimes found in poultry such as chickens.
• In the UK all chickens are vaccinated against salmonella. This control the spread of the disease.
