Tipu was the Sultan of Mysore in southern India from 1782 to 1799 and was a formidable enemy of the British. The EIC maligned his conduct by declaring him the monster of Mysore. He was helped by the French and defeated the British in the 2nd Anglo-Mysore War and forced the British to accept the Treaty of Mangalore in 1784. The EIC defeated him in the 3rd Anglo-Mysore War in 1789. Lord Wellesley’s army defeated and killed him in the 4th Anglo-Mysore War in 1799 in his fort of Seringapatam.
