Ecology: Lesson 11 - bioaccumulation & biomagnification

Cards (7)

  • Bioaccumulation
Organisms get rid of wastes and toxins from their body through urine or sweat. Some toxins, such as heavy metals (mercury) and pesticides (DDT) are not soluble in water but are soluble in fat. Because these toxins are not water soluble they are not eliminated by the body. Instead these toxins accumulate or are stored in the fatty tissues of the body.
  • Biomagnification
Biomagnification occurs when the pesticides in organisms in the lower part of the food chain pass on their internal toxins to their consumers. The toxins become more and more concentrated the higher the trophic level.
  • Pesticides
Chemicals that destroy anything that humans consider pests
  • Types of pesticides
    • Herbicides: Kill weeds
    • Insecticides: Kill Insects
    • Fungicides: Kill fungus
  • Pesticides
    • Prevent damage to crops and resources (e.g. food supply, forests)
    • Stop the spread of disease (e.g. Mosquitoes, rodents)
  • Modern day pesticides are extremely harmful to all organisms
  • As the toxin biomagnifies in a food chain
    It may reach toxic concentrations
