  • Introduction:
    In jb Priestley’s didactic play an inspector calls of 1945 exploits various characters throughout the play to represent different sectors of society on 1912 to express his political view point. Indeed, One of these central characters is Eric Birling - son of Mr and Mrs Birling. In the play Eric serves as conduit  representation of society’s younger generation of the day and here Priestley shows his hope for change.  
  • paragraph: act 1
    Point: In Act 1, Priestley presents Eric as quite an awkward character who lacks confidence, as well as being the antithesis of his father who everytine he tried to stand  up to his father he got shut down. Priestley may have done this to serve as a contrast to Mr Birling making the audience feel sympathetic towards him.  
    Quotes: 
    “early twenties, not quite at ease, half shy half assertive”
    “(Eric suddenly guffaws)”
    “yes i know - but still- “ Just let me finish eric.” -> tension between him 
  • paragraph 2: Mysteriously, Eric is absent in Act 2 which makes the audience note his absence and Priestley also reminds the audience of Eric to create tension and creates suspicion. Even his family take note of his absence as they say “Silly boy!”. However this all leads to Priestley dramatic drop revealing that he is indeed the father of Eva Smiths child.
    Quote: ”silly boy!”
    “(cutting in sharply) we do need him here.” creates tension.
