  • 'out damned spot, out I say!'

interestingly, the trochaic stresses abundant caesura of this line contain striking christian imagery through the 'damned spot' which reminds us of the blot of the original sin committed by adam and eve.
  • 'the four humours' theory

In ancient greek medical philosophy, there is a notion of 'four humours' which make up man's temperament. One of which is blood, representing sanguineness which implies an active, enthusiastic, risk-taking personality. If applied to evil purposes, sanguineness will only lead to over-leveraged risk and ultimate chaos, an exact recount of what happens to macbeth.
  • lady macbeth '[enters with a taper]'
as a taper provides light, this is emblematic of how LM seeks solace in her eternal mental darkness. Her need for light is the antithesis to her earlier presentation in Act 1, where she calls upon the night wanting darkness to help fuel her violent and malevolent plans: 'come thick night'. The motif of darkness and light reinforces how LM's depraved and dark yearns for violence consequently cause her desperation to see the light and seek redemption.
