Uyghur Muslims

• Uyghur Muslims are an ethnic minority in China and inhabit primarily the Xinjiang province
• The Chinese government has been accused of committing genocide against the Uyghurs, including forced sterilization, torture, and mass internment
• There's an estimated one million have been arbitrarily detained in Xinjiang internment camps since 2017
• 2014 = CCP announces a 'peoples war on terror' which led to imposed restrictions on Uyghur's lifestyle
• children of those detained are forcibly separated from parents and are sent to boarding schools and there are assumptions that similar indoctrination is taking place in order to wipe out the Uyghur cultural identity
• CCP encourages ethnically Han to migrate to Xinjiang where they receive better jobs and higher wages compared to the Uyghur population
• CCp denies having committed any human rights abuses
• Uyghur activists claim China is trying to eradicate their culture and religion
• the US, UK, Canada and Australia have sanctioned chinese officials involved with the repression of uyghurs

  • violations of reproductive rights - forced sterilisations, abortions etc
  • completely violates international law e.g. UDHR, ICESCR, ICERD, CAT
• china's actions can be seen as an attempt to maintain control over its territory and prevent separatism
