  • Raider's of the Sulu Sea - A Historiography documentary film focusing on Zamboanga City depicting how the Spaniards defended the city with the Fort Pilar as Spain’s last stronghold
  • The documentary centers on the activities of the slave raiders as a way of retaliation to the colonizers and a way to defend their way of life against oppression
  • The Sulu and Maguindanao sultanates were then the two main kingdoms controlling the Muslim colonies of the Southern Philippines.
  • With the king of Maguindanao, Rajah Dalasi, at the helm, they launched a bloody attack on Fort Pilar
  • Tausug - A tribe without maritime experience, but known for its fierce warriors and widespread political power.

  • Salisipan - Small boats designed for coastal raids. The largest Salisipan that was built is approximately 30 to 35 feet long. It is an open boat and usually runs along small rivers.
  • Lanong - Also known as Joanga. Approximately 24 to 27 meters long. Both sides of this are paddled and rowed by over 150 to 190 men.
  • Kalis - Sword with a mystical side.
  • Barong - single-edged leaf-shaped blade made of thick tempered steel. This approximately one-meter long weapon was used in close hand-to-hand battle to cut Spanish firearms down to size.
  • Kris - Weapon of warfare and ceremony. Measuring up to 1.2 meters in length, was not only carried by slave raiders into battle but also by nobles and high-ranking officials.
  • Kampilan - Heavy single-edged sword adorned with hair. At the tip of the blade are two horns projecting which is used to pick up the head of a decapitated body. It is the longest sword used by the Filipino warriors with the length of 36-40 inches.
  • In 1977, an archeological excavation in Butuan City revealed artifacts of ancient water vessels from 4th century. These ships were built and navigated by deaf sailors with intimate knowledge of the seas.

  • There were a total of 3,000 strong warriors that were led by Rajah Dalasi that attacked the fort. However, although Spanish soldiers were greatly skilled, they were outnumbered at that time with only 600 soldiers present at the fort.

  • 1848 - Panglima Taupan surrendered to the Spaniards. 450 died in the battle, 150 raiding ships were destroyed, and 350 Samal men and women were captured alive.
  • In 1909, the Tausug raider, Jikiri attacked and killed Americans in the Patian Island
