Power and Sovereignty

• 2014 = UN Security Council voted against Palestinian statehood despite in 2013 when in the UN General Assembly 193 members recognised the existence of the state of Palestine
• April 2024 = Palestine requested the UN Security Council for full UN membership which resulted in a US veto and UK and Switzerland's abstentions
• both Israel and Palestine claimed Jerusalem as theirs, in 2018 Trump moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem thus legitimising the Israeli claim
• Palestinian territory is divided territorially and politically
• Gaza Strip has been under Hamas control since 2007
• Israel controls access to West Bank through checkpoints
• Israeli Settlements


  • the settlements are a violation of the 4th Geneva Convention
  • Israeli settlements split up Palestinian Land and cutting transport links between Palestinian areas
• US has used (as of 2018) the veto power 43 times in regards to Israel and investigations into Human Rights Abuses which allows Israel to bypass international law and due to the US power, other states don't counter
