Ecology

• population- a group of organisms of the same species living in the same space
• biotic- all the living components
• abiotic- all the non-living components
• plants need: light, space, water, nutrients
• animals need: shelter, food, water, mates
• abiotic factors: light intensity, oxygen levels, wind intensity, temperature
• biotic factors- new predators, new pathogens, availability of food
• food chains- show whats eaten in an ecosystem
• producers- make their own food using photosynthesis (algae, plants)
• primary consumers eat- producers
• secondary consumers eat- primary consumers
• tertiary consumers eat- secondary consumers
• if the population of prey increases, predators population increases
• as population of predators increases the number of prey decreases
