  • Maternal deprivation
    • refers to the 'loss' of attachment, whether it is short or long term
    • Bowlby proposed that for a child to have a secure attachment there needs to be continuous care for children without disruption, during the critical period of development (aged 5 up)
  • Affectionless psychopathy
    • a condition characterised by lack of remorse for others, disregard for right and wrong and self-gratification seeking
    • people with this are more likely to commit crimes
    • developed through an insecure attachment

    • 39% of 44 thieves had experienced maternal deprivation before the age of 5 compared to only 5% of the control group who did not experience maternal deprivation
