sci 7 eclipse

Cards (23)

  • Celestial sphere
A tool of astronomers for tracking the movement of stars and other heavenly or celestial bodies
  • Ecliptic
The apparent path of the sun in the sky, or the celestial sphere as seen from earth
  • Types of eclipses
    • Solar eclipse
    • Lunar eclipse
  • Solar eclipse
    • Occurs when the moon aligns with the sun, causing the moon to partially or totally block your view of the sun
    • Is not seen all throughout the world, there are at least 2-5 solar eclipses around the world per year
    • For you to see a solar eclipse, the shadow of the moon has to cover the place where you are
  • Umbra
The darker inner shadow of the moon
  • Penumbra
    The outer, less dark shadow
  • Perigee
    The nearest position from earth
  • Apogee
    The farthest position from earth
  • Antumbra
The less dark version of the umbra when the moon is at its apogee
  • Types of solar eclipses
    • Total solar eclipse
    • Annular solar eclipse
    • Partial solar eclipse
  • Total solar eclipse
    • Happens when the moon totally covers the sun and only the wispy corona around the sun can be seen
    • One of the rare solar eclipses
    • Can be seen from earth when the umbra hits the surface of earth on its path of totality
  • Corona
The outer atmosphere of the sun that is not often seen because of the intense energy released by the surface of the sun
  • Annular solar eclipse
    • Is what people see on Earth when the moon's disk does not completely cover the sun during an eclipse
    • Moon-sun and earth are all aligned
    • You will also see an annulus or a ring of fire around the moon
  • Partial solar eclipse
    • Happens when the moon is large enough to cover the whole sun
    • It thus covers only a part of the view of the sun
  • Lunar eclipse
    • Occurs when the shadow of Earth covers the full moon, and the sunlight hitting the moon is blocked by Earth
  • Types of lunar eclipses
    • Total lunar eclipse
    • Partial lunar eclipse
    • Penumbral lunar eclipse
  • Total lunar eclipse
    • The moon is totally covered by the umbral shadow of earth
    • Happens during a full moon and only when the moon, sun and earth are aligned
  • Partial lunar eclipse
    • The moon is full and is covered partially by the umbra
    • Happens when the moon-earth and sun are not entirely aligned
  • Penumbral lunar eclipse
    • The actual eclipse may not be noticeable to the amateur or inexperienced astronomer
  • Atmosphere
    What is the atmosphere?
  • The atmosphere is divided into five different layers because the atmosphere is not uniform, its properties change with altitude
  • Properties that change with altitude
    • Air pressure
    • Air temperature
  • Aurora Borealis
    • Northern Lights in Sweden
