Earth

Cards (28)

  • Ore - a naturally occurring rock which has enough mineral to be worth extracting
  • Displaced - When an element is removed from a compound and is left as a sole element
  • Electrolysis - the process where electricity is used to split a compound into its elements
  • Recycling - the collecting and processing of materials that have been used so that the resources can be reused
  • Resources - raw materials that come from the earth
  • Global warming - The increase in the Earths temperature due to the greenhouse effect
  • Respiration- this is how animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide
  • Combustion - The process of burning a substance that could include fossil fuels or natural resources
  • Photosynthesis - this is how plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen
  • Carbon sinks - this is an area which absorbs carbon and stores it and its compounds
  • Climate change - long term changes to weather patterns
  • Electrolysis is a way of extracting metals
  • Electrolysis is used when the metal you are trying to extract is more reactive than carbon
  • We use ores to get pure metals
  • One ore is bauxite, which is where aluminum is extracted
  • When recycling aluminium is heated and melted. It is then formed into blocks.these blocks are then rolled into new sheets of aluminium
  • Advantages for recycling :
    • Resources will last longer
    • It uses less energy that extracting waste materials
    • It reduces waste and pollution
  • Disadvantages for recycling :
    • Separating rubbish cab be seen as a nuisance
    • The lorries collecting recycling produces pollution
    • Some materials are easier to recycle then others
  • The atmosphere is made put of 78% nitrogen, 1% argon and 0.04% carbon dioxide
  • Carbon is an element that is used to displace most metals from their ore compounds
  • Reduction is when carbon is added to a compound and the element you want is displaced by carbon
  • when the sun heats it sends rays. Some of these rays get trapped within the atmosphere and these rays are reflected back off the atmosphere. As these rays are trapped, the heat from them increases the temperature within the atmosphere leading to global warming
  • Withing the carbon cycle the process of respiration, combustion and photosynthesis are used
  • Carbon is naturally transferred to different storws
  • This is the carbon cycle
  • Climate change can lead to ice caps melting, which the leads ro a rise in sea levels and then flooding
  • Ways to prevent climate change :
    • Using renewable energy sources
    • Using cars less
    • Buying and wasting less resources
  • The carbon cycle is when Carbon is taken out of the atmosphere by producers via photosynthesis. It is passed on to animals and decomposers by feeding. It is returned to the atmosphere by respiration; in plants, in animals and in decomposing microorganisms
