Biology- Energy Transfer

Cards (14)

  • What sort of reaction is respiration?
    Exothermic
  • What is an endothermic reaction?
endothermic reaction is when energy is taken in from the surroundings
  • What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is respiration that uses up oxygen. This is the breakdown of glucose to release energy and it releases carbon dioxide as a waste product. The oxygen is carried to the bodies cells by the haemoglobin. This is found in the red blood cells.
  • Where does aerobic respiration take place?
Aerobic respiration takes place in the mitochondria of a cell
  • What is the energy used from respiration used for?
Respiration releases lots of thermal energy which is used to maintain a constant body temperature, muscle contraction and tissue repair
  • What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
  • What is anaerobic respiration?
Anaerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose in the absence of oxygen. It tends to occur during periods of intense exercise, when the body is using energy at a fast rate. If the body cannot supply enough oxygen through breathing, then the glucose cannot fully be broken down.
  • What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose --> lactic acid (+ energy)
  • What is lactic acid?
Lactic acid is an organic acid which is poisonous and causes your muscles to get tired. This results in muscle fatigue.
  • What is oxygen debt?
Oxygen debt is the oxygen required after vigorous exercise.
  • What is fermentation?
Fermentation is an anaerobic process which produces ethanol from glucose
  • What is the Word equation for fermentation?
    Glucose --> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide (+Energy)
  • What can fermentation be used for?
Fermentation can be used in the production of bread and alcohol
  • Lactic acid builds up when your body requires more oxygen than your lungs can provide.
