  • Ground floors of homes are usually built with timber & brick BUT demand for housing = extra storeys added out of scrap wood/metal; use of kerosene fuel + electrical wiring being improvised and can overheat = increased chance of fires
  • Environmental quality - open sewers, lack of access to clean water as toilets lead directly into the river, kerosene and electrical wiring overload = large fires which spread easily
  • Education - Schools are poorly equipped and kids end up back in the informal sector (CYCLE of POVERTY), garment industry is a major source of employment for young women, children are forced to leave education to make money
  • Healthcare - Toilets are available however are run by businesses to make a profit, toilets are depoisted into the streets where people shower & drink, Hot + humid climate conditions make it a perfect location for mosquitos --> Malaria
  • Income - 60% of Jakartas economy is informal - small businesses, self employment, service based; Most residents are on less than $4 a day; factory workers are mistreated due to poor conditions + overcrowded
  • Age/Gender - Young generation due to the lack of education on contraception, families have usually lived through many generations = creates a strong sense of community
  • The Jakarta housing and administrative building agency has identified 392 community units that it seeks to improve, upgrade building materials + improve infrastructure for sewers and clean water, clear slums BUT this may cause residents to move to other slums due to convenience + affordability
