  • Alliteration: The repetition of consonant letters at the beginning of words.
  • Simile: Comparing 2 unlike things using like or as
  • Metaphor: Comparing 2 unlike things NOT using like or as
  • Onomatopeia: Words that imitate sounds
  • Oxymoron: Expressions that contradict eachother
  • Hyperbole: Extreme exaggeration
  • Personification: Giving human qualities to non-humans
  • Antagonist: The bad guy
  • Protagonist: Main character, usually the good guy
  • Internal Conflict: Man vs Self
  • Internal Conflict Definition: Character who has a problem with themselves (low self- esteem, mind-battles, etc.
  • External Conlifct: Man vs Man
  • External Conflict Definition: Character who has a problem with someone else
  • Man vs Society: Character has a problem with the law
  • Man vs Nature: Character has a problem with nature (weather, animals etc)
  • Man vs Technology: Character has a problem with Technology (robots, computers, etc)
  • Man vs Supernatural: Character has a problem with ghosts or things in the Spirit realm
  • Speaker: Someone who is the voice of the poem. The speaker is often the poet. However, it can be a character in the poem.
  • Stanzas: Are groups of lines in a poem
  • Rhyme Scheme: The pattern of rhyme in a poem. Words with the same rhyme get the same letter
  • Repetition: Used for emphasis in poetry. The Poet repeats the same words, lines, stanzas or phrases
  • Figurative Language: used words and expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation
  • Literal Language: means exactly what it says (eg: today is Thursday)
  • Metaphor: A comparison between two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’. It states one thing IS another thing
