Separation methods

Cards (9)

  • Filtration : separate a liquid and a suspended solid
  • Disalinisation is a form of distillation , it is the process of removing salts from sea water
  • Distillation ( simple still ) is used to remove a liquid from a liquid and a dissolved solid
  • Evaporation happens when a solid is separated from a liquid and a dissolved solid , but we don't care about collecting the liquid without the dissolved solid
  • Fracyional distillation is used to separate mixtures of liquids
  • Chromatography is used to separate the pigments of a coloured mixture that is soluble with the soluble used for chromatography
  • Sedimentation tank is when suspended and usually large solids ( more dense than water ) will fall at the borrom of the tank for them to be removed after and obtain the water without the suspended solids
  • In a sedimation tank separation technique , the water often comes from unsure sources and need to be cleaned for use. Water come from sources such as reservoir or rivers , it then will go through a circuit that will purify it and make it drinkable . It will go through three steps : sedimentation .
  • Sedimentation : Water will first come into a sedimentation tank to remove the bigger suspended solids , it will then go through a tank with different layers of gravels and sands(fine sand , sand ,gravel then fine gravels) , it will go to another tank , where we will add chlorine to kill the bacterias , at the end , clean water get stocked in a tower ,ready to be used
