  • Pueblo Revolt (1680)

    Native American revolt against the Spanish due to forced assimilation; killed hundreds of Spanish & destroyed Catholic Churches in the area
  • Anglo-powhatan Wars (1622-1632)

    Conflicts between English settlers & Native Americans & led to the banishment of Native Americans from their land in the where the English were establishing colonies
  • Bacon's Rebellion (1676)

    Rebellion led by Nathaniel Bacon due to frustration with lack of land, political power, & native attacks. Attacked Native Americans on the frontier & burned Jamestown. (led to shift from indentured servants to slaves)
  • Pequot War (1637)

    Conflict between English settlers and Pequot Indians over control of land and trade. Led to Pequot being removed from their land
  • Metacom's War (1675)

    Native Americans battle New England colonies; large percentage of Native Americans died, making it one of the bloodiest wars in US; severely damaged the Native American presence in the new world
  • King William's War (1689-1697)

    Britain attempted to conquer Quebec but failed due to native support for the French
  • Queen Anne's War (1702-1713)

    Britain gained Nova Scotia & trading rights in Spanish America
  • Seven Years War (1754-1763)

    War between France and Britain due to France wanting Britain to stop creating settlements in Ohio River Valley, Algonquins sided with the French and the Iroquois sided with the British and the colonists.
  • Pontiac's Rebellion (1763)

    Native American uprising due to frustration over colonists continue to move west, destroyed settlements until British troops came to stop rebellion
  • American Revolution (1775-1783)

    A revolution started by English colonists. It was based on a belief that they were not represented on issues of taxation and land rights from Britain. Started with Lexington & Concord & Britain's failure to listen to colonists pleas
  • Whiskey Rebellion (1794)

    Protest against the government's tax on whiskey by backcountry farmers
  • War of 1812 (1812-1815)

    Between Britain & US over trade & impressment of ships, ended in a relative draw, earned US respect from European powers, & native Americans were abandoned by British protections
  • Mexican-American War (1846-1848)

    Conflict between the US and Mexico that after the US annexation of Texas, which Mexico still considered its own. As victor, the US aqcuired new territories from Mexico (California, New Mexico, Arizona) through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
  • Civil War (1861-1865)

    deadliest war in American history; conflict between Union & Confederacy after 11 states seceded from the US, caused by arguments over states rights & slavery
  • Great Railroad Strike (1877)

    Railroad companies cut wages causing a strike across 11 states & led to 2/3 of railroads shutting down (led to higher wages & new tactics to stop organized labor)
  • Homestead Strike (1892)

    A strike at a Carnegie steel plant in Homestead Pennsylvania for 5 months but was broken by scabs & private guards (led to legitimacy of unionism to decrease)
  • Spanish-American War (1898)

    Between US & Spain due to yellow-journalism & sinking of the Maine, led to Cuban independence, acquisition of Puerto Rico & Guam, and US control of Phillipines
  • US in WWI (1917)

    Stayed neutral for as long as possible by only giving allies supplies, eventually joined war after ZImmerman telegram, joined at the end of the war & joined the allies, ended with Germany being broke, independence for previously claimed European territories, & League of Nations
  • The US in WWII (1939)

    Brought US out of Great Depression, US tried to stay out of it again but Japan attack Pearl Harbor causing US to join, US joined allies, US dropped atomic bombs on Japan, ended with allies breaking Germany up into occupation zones, US being the least effected country economically, & creation of UN
  • Korean War

    • After WWII Korea divided at 38th parelle. North was occupied by the Soviets, and South was occupied by the US. 
    • Once the military left North was in control of a Communist leader & South was in control of a Nationalist leader. 
    • North invaded the South & US called for UN force & sent soldiers to defend the South. 
    • Macarthur wanted to expand the war to include China but Truman wouldn’t allow it. 
    • Stalemate on both sides. 
    • Republicans didn’t like Truman’s soft-on communism containment policies and Eisenhower won the next election.
  • Yom Kippur War

    Egypt & Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel. The US sent billions in arms to Israel to force a retreat. After the war, OPEC members put an embargo on oil causing a worldwide oil shortage.
  • Vietnam War

    Domino Theory in SE Asia that if one country fell to communism then all would follow. US troops sent to fight communist powers in Vietnam after years of fighting Nixon started gradually removing them before the war ended
