  • Retribution
    About getting your own back for something that has been done wrong to you. Exodus teaches 'an eye for an eye' so some Orthodox Jews and traditional Christians may support this type of punishment
  • Deterrence
    Hopes to deter people from committing crime if they are aware of punishment. E.g. Death penalty
  • Protection
    Aims to protect society from the criminal and the criminal from themselves such as prison
  • Vindication
    Aims to make sure the law is respected. E.g. Fines
  • Reparation
    Punishment should compensate the victim. This is seen as restorative justice
  • Reformation
    Punishment should aim to change the criminal for the better. Most Christians and Jews will favour this type of punishment and it can be achieved through the work of prison chaplains
