Job of red blood cells is to carry
oxygen
from the
lungs
around the body
Red blood cells have a biconcave shape which gives them a larger surface area for absorbing oxygen
Red blood cells have a red pigment called
haemoglobin
phagocytes are responsible for engulfing and destroying pathogens
Lymphocytes are white blood cells that produce antibodies and help fight off infection
Unlike red blood cells,
white blood cells
have a
nucleus
Platelets
are small fragments of cells that help clot blood and form blood
clots.
Plasma
is the liquid part of the blood that contains dissolved substances and carries
oxygen
and nutrients
Arteries
carry blood
away
from the heart and have thick muscular walls to withstand high pressure
Capilleries
are involved with
gas exchange
Veins carry blood to the heart at a
low
pressure. They have a
large
lumen and thin walls.
The right side of the heart pumps
deoxygenated
blood to the
lungs
while the left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
The
cardiovascular
system consists of the heart and blood vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries). It
transports
materials around the body.
Capillaries
are tiny blood vessels where
gases
and other materials can pass between the bloodstream and tissues.
