weathering

Cards (6)

  • chemical weathering: rocks mineral composition changed
  • weathering: impact on the land
  • mechanical weathering examples:
freeze thaw - water in cracks expands as it is frozen, overtime, crack widens and pieces of rock fall away
    salt cracking
biological - plants grow in cracks
  • chemical weathering examples:
carbonation - acid from sea breaks down rocks (chalk etc.)
hydrolysis - acidic rain breaks down rock
oxidation - rocks broken down by oxygen
  • mass movement: downhill movement of material under the influence of gravity
  • types of mass movement:
sliding - loosened rock + soil tumble down the slope.
weakened steep rocks, heavy rain infiltrates soil and into rock, heavier saturated mass falls away, slide begins, descent aided by lubrication from wet rocks
slumping - saturated rock slides down a concave/ curved slip plane
rockfalls - large amount of rock loses contact with cliff face
