Tudor- Mary I

• Mary I's 3 aims for her reign were:

  1. Restore Roman Catholicism and the Pope as the head of the church of England.
  2. Marry and have children to carry on succession.
  3. strengthen England's ties with Spain
• Lady Jane Grey was made heir of the English throne over Mary by Edward VI. She was Queen for 9 days. She was later executed after Wyatt rebellion in 1554
• Mary I married King Phillip II of Spain. Many people, nobles and peasants, were xenophobic to foreigners and feared Spanish control of England.
• Mary I's religious reformation during her reign was the return of England to Catholicism from Protestantism during Edward VI.
• The Wyatt rebellion was in 1554 under Mary I.
• Northumberland's coup occurred in 1553 under Mary I.
• Mary reigned from 1553 to 1558.
• Wyatt rebellion was lead by Sir Thomas Kett. Starting in Kent, in protest to Mary's proposed marriage to Phillip of Spain. There were multiple rebellions planned but all but one uprising occurred. Kett was arrested in London and later executed.
• Northumberland's coup was in reaction to attempting to prevent Mary from gaining the throne. He asserted claim of Lady Jane Grey, his daughter-in-law. He was later executed by Mary.
