  • Over the Top: when soldiers went into no man’s land toward the enemy trenches into hand to hand combat from the front line trenches
  • Stalemate: a situation where further action or progress by opposing or competing parties seem impossible
  • No-man's land: the land between the trenches
    • Pitted with craters and blacked tree stumps from constant shelling
  • Trench Raid: making small night time attacks on the enemy trenches to try and bring an enemy back or steal important documents
  • Billet: a living quarters where a soldier is assigned to sleep - food and shelter
  • Sap: a tunnel dug beneath the trenches to be a surprise attack against the enemy
  • Trench Cycle: When soldiers take turns patrolling each trench 
    • Soldiers had very little food and was often attacked by rats
    • Rats the size of small rabbits and badgers because they had fed on decomposing bodies of dead soldiers
  • Trench Foot - rotting and swelling of legs and feet due to a lot of water exposure
    • Treatment was whale blubber or amputation
  • Lice: caused trench fever
    • Treatment: burn seams, keep hair short
  • Firing Trenches: the front line trench located at the edge of “No Man’s Land” containing machine gun nests and observation posts
  • Support Trenches: contained support troops who would back up the troops in the firing trench when being invaded
  • Communication Trenches: Located within the support trench, used to communicate between trenches
  • Reserve Trenches: Contained reserve soldiers, contained latrines, aid posts, and kitchens
