  • Propaganda: the way that governments were able to spread a certain message to the people of that country
    • Used to explain the reasons for entering war
    • Recruiting men to the army
    • A way to raise money and resources to keep the military campaign
    • Encourage members of the country to save resources needed by the soldiers
  • Why posters?
    • Tv was not yet invented
    • Not everyone had access or owned a radio
    • Posters were most effective means of getting a message across
  • Name calling or stereotyping: putting a bad label on an idea
    • Name paints a cause or product on a bad light
    • Discredit the opponent
  • Bandwagon: when everyone else is doing it so you should do it too
    • Convince the audience to follow the crowd
  • Slogans: simple short phrases that are easy to remember
    • Make someone feel the emotions and understand better
  • Testimonial: having an authorial person to endorse the product
  • Transfer: used the authority or virtue of a group to promote a cause or product
    • “Militant men drink coca cola”
  • why did men join the war
    • Patriotism
    • Peer pressure - sign up to be with your friends
    • A sense of shame or cowardice if you didn't volunteer
    • Revenge for German atrocities
    • A desire for adventure
    • Escape from unemployment, a change to earn money (1$ a day for infantrymen, 3 meals a day)
