    The term open source refers to something people can modify and share because its design is publicly accessible

    1. Free Software Before 1980's
    2. 1950s - 1960s = Almost all software was produced by academics and corporate researchers working in collaboration, often shared as public-domain software
    3. 1953 = The first example of free and open-source software is believed to be the A-2 system, developed at the UNIVAC division of Remington Rand
    4. 1969 = The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), a transcontinental, high-speed computer network was constructed
    5. Late 1960s = Initial decline of Free Software
    6. Early 1970s = distributed early versions of Unix at no cost to government
    7. 1980s and 1990s = Informal software sharing continues
