    • Prevention is key
  • Before an earthquake
    1. Know earthquake hazards in your area
    2. Follow structural design and engineering practices when constructing buildings
    3. Evaluate structural soundness of buildings
    4. Prepare homes, workplaces, schools
    5. Strap or vault heavy furniture, cabinets to walls
    6. Check stability of hanging objects
    7. Store breakable, harmful, flammable items properly
    8. Familiarize with fire extinguishers, first aid kits, communication alarms
    9. Prepare emergency supply kit
  • Learn how to use emergency equipment beforehand
  • During an earthquake
    1. If possible, quickly open door for exit
    2. Duck under table or desk, protect head with arms
    3. Stay away from glass, shelves, cabinets, heavy objects
    4. Beware of falling objects
    5. If outside, move to open area away from trees, power lines, concrete structures
    6. If near shore, move quickly to higher ground for tsunami risk
    7. If in vehicle, stop and get out, don't cross damaged bridges
  • After an earthquake
    1. Take fastest, safest way out of building, don't use elevators
    2. Don't enter damaged buildings, don't use telephone unless necessary
    3. Check yourself and others for injuries
    4. Check water, electrical lines for damage
    5. Check for chemical spills, toxic/flammable materials
    6. Check and control any fires
    7. If evacuating, leave message stating where you're going
    8. Bring emergency supply kit
