Actions taken by individuals or groups to protect, care for or responsibly use the environment to pursue environmental and social outcomes
Environmental stewardship
Conserve natural resources
Preserve the existing natural environment
Repair damages and reverse negative impacts caused by humans to ensure sustainability
Achieving environmental stewardship
1. Promoting volunteerism among neighbourhood residents to share knowledge with others on the importance of healthy ecosystems (so that they are more aware of what they can or should do)
2. Partnership of public and private sectors
Disaster risks are the likelihood of damage to properties, injuries and loss of lives from a disaster in a given period of time
They are caused by three main factors:
Nature of hazard–the characteristics of the hazard
Vulnerability–the conditions determined by physical, social, economic and environmental factors, which increase the susceptibility of people and their belongings to the impacts of the hazards
Exposure–the situation of people and their belongings located in hazard-prone areas
Disaster risk management are the plans and actions taken to prevent new risks from happening, reduce existing risks and manage disaster risks.
This also strengthens community resilience.
They aim to reduce a neighbourhood’s exposure to hazards and the vulnerability of people and properties to hazards.
This can be done by improving residents’ emergencypreparedness to respond to natural and technological hazards. Another way is to implement monitoring and warning systems.
Community resilience
The ability of a community to resist and adapt to and recover from impacts of disasters in a timely and efficient manner
Developing community resilience
Strengthening relationships among residents and raisingawareness of potentialhazards –they are encouraged to get to know their neighbours so that they can depend on one another during an emergency.
Community resilience can also be developed by developing residents’ ability to organise themselves and equip themselves with resources to resist, adapt and recover from a disaster–they can be involved in an inclusive planning process that involves community leaders, civil society organisations and the government . When residents activelyparticipate in such projects, they get a better understanding of the risk adaptation options to communicate to the planners and government.
