Biodiversity

Cards (31)

  • Biotic = living or once-living things
  • Abiotic = not associated with or derived from living organisms.
  • Sunlight is abiotic
  • Rocks are abiotic
  • Trees are biotic
  • Genus species

Often how the name of an organism is written in Scientific terms.
  • Family
Ranks below family but below genus
  • Organisms that fall under the Eukarya domain have cells with nuclei.
  • There are 6 kingdoms
  • Organisms that fall under prokaryotes or archaea have cells that are like a nucleus.
  • The 6 kingdoms
Plantae, Protista, Fungi, Animalia, Bacteria, Archaea
  • Phyla are categories used to group organisms based on shared characteristics.
  • Order is a category used to group similar organisms within a class
  • Families are categories that group similar organisms within an order
  • Archaea and Bacteria - Contains prokaryotes (single-celled organisms that lack a nucleus)
  • Eukarya contains eukaryotes (cells contain a nucleus and membraned organelles)
  • Archaea - single cells that adapt to extreme (harsh) environments
  • Bacteria - prokaryotes don’t live in harsh environments.
  • Protista - single-celled, photosynthesis (e.g. algae)
  • Fungi - mushrooms, molds and yeast
  • Plantae - plant that produce photosynthesis.
  • Animalia - animals that eat other organisms.
  • Organisms are classified in a phylum or division based largely on general body plan.
  • Arthropods - exterior exoskeletons (e.g. insects, crabs)
  • Chordata (aka vertebrate) - Internal skeleton & Backbone (e.g. fish, amphibians, birds, mammals)
  • Mollusca - muscular foot and soft body, sometimes covered in a shell (e.g. mussel, snails, clams)
  • Class will share more characteristics with each other.
  • Examples of class:
    Reptiles, mammals, Amphibians, Crustaceans
  • Examples of Order:

Primates (monkeys), Chiroptera (bats), Rodentia (rats), Carniora (eats meat, dogs)
  • Examples of Family:
Canidae (dogs, wolves), Mustildae (otters and weasels), Felidae (cats, lions), Cervidae (deers, caribou)
  • Genus and Species:
    Homo Sapiens = Humans
    Panthera leo = Lion
    Panthera tigri = tiger
