Locus of control: Rotter's theory that people have a sense of control over their lives or not.
internal locus of control: the belief that one has control over one's own actions and outcomes - independence
external locus of control: the belief that things happen because they are outside of our control
resistance to social influence: high internal locus of control - due to self-confidence and base decisions of their own beliefs.
strength: Holland recreated Milgram's study and measured whether people were internal or external. He found that 37% of internals did not continue whereas 23% of externals didn't - internal showed greater resistance to authority.
one limitation: Rotter points out that LOC is not necessarily the most significant factor,. someones LOC only affects their behaviour in new situations
