Types of Animation

Cards (23)

  • Animation
The process of creating the illusion of motion and change by rapidly displaying a sequence of images or frames
  • To animate
    To give life to
  • Persistence of Vision Theory
    • The brain retains an image for a fraction of second after it disappears from our sight
    • When a series of still images is shown in rapid succession, the brain blends them together, creating the illusion of continuous motion
  • FPS
    • The number of individual frames (or still images) displayed or recorded per second to create the illusion of motion
    • A measure of the smoothness and fluidity of motion in an animation or video
  • Types of Animation
    • Traditional Cel Animation
    • 2D Animation
    • 3D Animation
    • Typography Animation
    • Flipbook Animation
    • Stop Motion Animation
  • Traditional Cel Animation
    • One of the oldest and most traditional forms of animation
    • Involves hand drawing every scene on clear celluloid sheets
    • The sheets with the painted background are placed one on top of the other
  • 2D Animation
    • Involves creating movements using static images in two dimensions
    • Characters and backgrounds are drawn directly into the computer, and software assists in creating the animation by sequencing the drawings
  • 3D Animation
    • Involves creating characters, objects, and environments in a three-dimensional digital space
    • Use specialized software like Blender to model, rig, animate, and render scenes
    • Used in animated films, video games, and visual effects for movies
  • Typography Animation
    • Involves moving text with effects
    • Used in movies and other videos as title screens, intro segments, credits segments
  • Flipbook Animation
    • A display that contains many pages, with each page being only slightly different than the next
    • When the pages are flipped at a rapid rate, the images appear to have movement
  • Stop Motion Animation
    • Technique where the objects used in the scene are physically moved in every frame and photographed
    • These individual photographs are edited and created into a sequence to create an illusion of movement
    • Used in cartoons, short films, commercials, and other creative mediums
  • Standard FPS is 24 fps
  • Model
    The character
  • Rig
    The movement of a character
  • Rotoscope
Technique of using live action models
  • Stopmotion examples
    Claymation
    Puppetry
    Cut-out
    Silhouette
  • Other Term for the Persistence of Vision Theory
    Persistence of Visual Perception
  • Rotoscoping
animation technique that traces over live-action footage to create realistic movements
  • Other Term for Clear Celluloid Sheets
    acetate
  • Rotoscoping
technique used in animation and visual effects to trace over live-action footages to create realistic movement
  • Modelling
process of creating a three-dimensional representation of an object or character by shaping and sculpting its geometry to achieved desired appearance
  • Rigging
process of creating digital skeleton for a character or object to control the movement and deformation of the character
  • Onion Skin
used to create a translucent guide to trace over frames
