  • The Internet
    A massive worldwide infrastructure composed of computers, servers, data lines, network towers, submarine cables, and even satellites that help transfer electronic data
  • The Internet
    • Started with advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET) in the late 1960s
    • Used to send and receive data across its computers during Cold War
    • Created a "network of networks" where data can be routed to another connection should one be cut off
    • ARPANET only connected a few networks on the US West Coast and reached East Coast by the early 1970s
    • ARPANET researchers developed the Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • By the end of the 1970s, the network connected to computers in Hawaii and London
  • World Wide Web
    In 1989, computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee started to on the World Wide Web and introduced HTML, HTTP and URL
  • Internet adoption
    • Increased in the 1990s when access became widely available as Internet Service Providers (ISPs) offered consumer-level subscriptions
    • The 2000s saw an explosion of various Internet trends such as blogging, podcasting, and vlogging
    • Today, we have fiber and broadband connections to our homes and we can also readily access the Internet through our mobile devices
  • Browsing the Web
    Using a Windows device, Microsoft Edge is the default web browser, but you can also download and install other web browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome
  • Creating an Account
    1. Be sure your computer is connected to the Internet, launch your web browser, and go to https://www.gmail.com, click "Create an Account"
    2. Google may detect that you are connected through a Philippine ISP which may set the page to default to Filipino, you can change the language setting on the sign-in page
    3. Click Create account > For myself, fill in the required boxes to continue, never share your account details with anyone
    4. Once your registration is successful, you can then log in to Gmail using your username and password

  • Shared File Storage
    File hosting services allow you to share files and folders with your collaborators, two popular ones are Google Drive and Dropbox
  • Google Workspace
    Similar to Microsoft Office, it features different productivity apps that students and professionals can find useful
  • Sharing and Collaboration
    1. Through Workspace apps, you can directly shared your work files with your team
    2. Team members can work on the file in turns or even simultaneously
    3. Workspace apps allow you to place comments on various portions of your document, a great way to share ideas and suggestions
  • Online Whiteboards
    • AWW is an online whiteboard app that is free to use, users can instantly use the whiteboard and even share it with collaborators, but it displays advertisements to free users
    • Miro is another online whiteboard that allows you to use more features such as sticky notes and even draw mind maps
